20th Birthday Winner of Suzuki Swift

What is better than receiving a present on someone else’s birthday? Botany Town Centre customer Taniya Bassi had that thrilling experience in June when she won the competition for a brand-new, sparkling blue Suzuki Swift in celebration of Botany’s 20th birthday.
Like many of the best things in life, it all happened quite unexpectedly, Taniya says. “I had been shopping at Botany and the lovely ladies at JacquiE and Life Pharmacy encouraged me to enter. I don’t usually enter these competitions because I haven’t won anything in the past, so I thought I would just try my luck. When I found out I was a finalist, I was thrilled at first but then I realised the draw clashed with my son’s Beauty and the Beast performance at the Aotea Centre! I told Centre Management I would find a way to do both, which I did (only just!).
On the day of the competition, which involved choosing a key and finding out whether it was the right one to start the car, Taniya says, “It was nerve-wracking. I honestly thought someone would have the winning key before me but with each person it just got more real. I remember the ladies that were number 9 and 10 in the draw sharing the same sentiments with me. When it was my turn it was down to the last three keys in the box. I was going to pick up one but then thought that didn’t look like a Swift key so I moved to the one that looked like it would fit. When it turned and the engine started I almost couldn’t believe it and had to sit down.”
In the aftermath, Taniya had to break the news to her family, who were all at the Aotea Centre for the big performance. “I couldn’t ring them immediately – I don’t think they would have forgiven me for interrupting the opening scene that took four months to prepare. After the winning draw and photo shoot I drove downtown, slipped quietly into the theatre and had to contain my excitement until the interval, when I burst out the news. The family all came back to Botany to see the car and my son was super-excited.”
As a long-time customer and supporter of Botany Town Centre, the surprise of a new car is all the more special for Taniya. “I have lived in the area for about 15 years – I am a secondary school teacher but more recently have been working in my own marine business in East Tamaki. Botany Town Centre was the highlight of the area when I moved here and it has always been my go-to place for everything – it’s a great stress-free shopping experience, it’s accessible and has quality, reputable stores. We love the special celebrations they have throughout the year, and my son has taken a photo with the Botany Santa every Christmas since he was born.”
