Shopping Shuttle
BOTANY TOWN CENTRE AND COMMUNITY GROUPS RESUME WEEKLY SHUTTLE SERVICE FOR SENIORS
Elderly Manukau East residents with mobility difficulties will be heartened by the return of the weekly shuttle service to Botany Town Centre on 7 February after a brief summer holiday break. The service has proved a great success since its July 2007 launch, with local seniors regularly using the shuttle to shop and socialise over coffee or lunch.
This service is organised by Manukau East Council of Social Services (MECOSS) and will be jointly managed by Age Concern, the Needs Assessment Service from CMDHB, and Botany Town Centre, which is managed by AMP Capital Shopping Centres. Two shuttles are running every Thursday from 7 February, each with capacity for 10 residents. Passengers are picked up from their homes and driven to Botany Town Centre, at a round-trip cost of $5. The Salvation Army supplies the vehicle and petrol, and volunteer drivers and shopping companions assist with the delivery of the service. Botany Town Centre offers each shuttle-rider a free tea or coffee at Sierra, Columbus, Muffin Break, Esquires, Starbucks or The Coffee Club, and mobility assistance equipment when required.
MECOSS Manager Alison Dyson said it was great to see everyone working together to help the area’s elderly folk. “We’re so pleased by the success of the service. We knew there was a need for this support for elderly residents of the area, and the cooperation of these groups to make it happen shows that our community is recognizing and meeting this need.”
Ms Dyson said older people could be isolated and vulnerable, and that in order for the elderly to continue to live independently in their own homes, good support services were necessary. “Botany Town Centre and its participating retailers should be commended for recognising this.”
Jennifer Manning, Senior Centre Manager for Botany Town Centre, agreed that it was important to help this sector of the community, and said her staff looked forward to resuming their welcome of Botany’s special Thursday visitors. “We see our role here as not being just a shopping destination, but also a hub for the local community. The shuttle service means elderly people can come to Botany Town Centre to do their weekly shopping, socialise and enjoy a complimentary hot drink at one of our cafés. We have had a few new cafés come on board this year, and it’s gratifying that our retailers are actively supporting the service. The residents truly appreciate it.”
Local seniors who wish to use the shuttle require a referral from Age Concern, with eligibility for the service determined according to need. Assessments are conducted by the Needs Assessment unit at Middlemore Hospital.
Age Concern will be taking phone bookings for the service. MECOSS welcomes enquiries from volunteers who wish to assist in a shopping companion capacity at the shopping destination.
